Hong Kong Style Mahjong
Mahjong Hands
A complete reference of all recognised hands, bonus combinations, and special hands — with point levels and tile illustrations.
In Hong Kong Style Mahjong, hands are scored in fan (levels). A minimum winning hand starts at 3 fan. Bonus conditions stack on top of the base hand level. The hands below are grouped from common to rare.
Common Hands
Minimum level hand — a mix of suits, sets, and sequences. No special combinations required.
One suit plus honour tiles (dragons or winds). Sets and sequences allowed.
Single suit only — all tiles from one suit. Sets and sequences allowed.
Multiple suits, all sets (Pongs/Kongs) — no sequences (Chows) allowed.
Single suit, all sets (Pongs/Kongs) only — no sequences. Higher scoring than Mixed Pongs.
Point Bonuses
These bonuses stack on top of any base hand. Each adds +1 fan (level) to the winning hand's score.
Bonus Hands
All three dragon Pongs (White, Red, Green) plus any pair as the eye.
Two dragon Pongs plus a pair of the third dragon as the eye.
All four wind Pongs (East, South, West, North) plus any pair as the eye. One of the highest-scoring hands.
Three wind Pongs plus a pair of the fourth wind as the eye.
Single suit — a Pong of 1, a sequence of 2–8, and a Pong of 9. Must be fully concealed; wins on any tile of that suit.
Green Dragon Pong plus Bamboo suit Pongs only, with a Bamboo pair as the eye.
Red Dragon Pong plus Character suit Pongs only, with a Character pair as the eye.
White Dragon Pong plus Stone (Dot) suit Pongs only, with a Stone pair as the eye.
Seven random pairs — no sets or sequences. Each pair must be a different tile.
Four fully concealed Kongs (4 identical tiles each) plus a concealed pair. Can only win by self-draw.
Special Mahjong Hands
One each of all terminal tiles (1 and 9 of every suit), all winds, all dragons — plus a duplicate of any one of those thirteen tiles as the pair.
Seven pairs using only wind and dragon tiles — no suit tiles at all.
Extra Special Hands
These rare hands each score Level 8 and have unusual tile compositions that don’t follow the standard set-plus-pair structure.
Tiles 1–7 of one suit plus all four winds and all three dragons. No eye (pair) required.
Full 1–9 sequence of one suit plus all four winds, with an eye (pair).
Full 1–9 sequence of one suit plus all three dragons, with a wind pair as the eye.
Seven matching tiles (1–7) from two different suits. No eye required.
Four matching tiles (1–4) across all three suits, with any pair as the eye.
